On Commitment and Defining Who You Are

Jeremiah Luke Barnett

--

At some point in your life you’re going to commit to something.

You have to decide, will you stick to what you have said you will do? Or will you be the kind of person who compromises when things get tough?

Someone taught me a while ago that it isn’t the good moments that define who I am but, rather, the difficult ones. This was the hardest thing to have been taught because the difficult moments were the moments when I felt like I had the right to give in.

It is the difficult moments with no one watching when you decide whether to stay true to a commitment or not. That is the moment that defines who you are.

This is both a sobering thing, a terrifying thing but also an incredibly empowering thing. You get to decide in that moment who you are and who you want to be and who you’re going to be in the future. You get to decide if you will be the person who overcomes the most difficult circumstances, the mental battles, the exhaustion, the emotional battles.

You can overcome them but you have to choose to fight.

Those are the moments that define who you are. So decide that you are going to be the person that makes the difficult decision in the hard times.

Stick to your commitment and define who you are in the difficult moments.
